Lighthouse Status is the CHERRY on Top!

Lighthouse School Seal

Bowling Green Independent Schools ended another successful school year on May 23, 2018 and celebrated T. C. Cherry Elementary School earning Lighthouse Status. This recognition was made because the school has achieved outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing The Leader in Me process with fidelity. It is also because of the extraordinary impact the school is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community.

T. C. Cherry is the third school in BGISD and 10th in the county to earn Lighthouse Status since 2014. All schools earning this status have demonstrated the nine Lighthouse School Criteria through the FranklinCovey Leader In Me, including: A Lighthouse Team, Leadership Environment, Integrated Instruction and Curriculum, Staff Collaboration, Student Leadership, Parent Involvement, Goal Tracking, Measurable Results, and Leadership Events.

Kory Twyman, principal of T. C. Cherry Elementary said, “We are honored to become a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. We have seen amazing results from implementing The Leader in Me at our school, and we have met many of our Wildly Important Goals, or WIGs. These goals have resulted a range of improvements including student attendance, improved reading stamina, and better math fluency. As we worked to meet these goals, data was graphed and visible to individual students and the entire school. This process and focus on meeting goals had a significant impact and we expect to see even greater results over time.”

The Leader in Me is an integrated approach to teaching leadership using Dr. Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The model allows all involved to “put first things first,” “be proactive” and “think win-win.” The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce strongly believes that The Leader in Me prepares the future workforce by teaching children about leadership, accountability, teamwork and much more—all of which are integral skills for talent development. The Chamber collaborates with both the Bowling Green Independent Schools, Warren County Schools and the FranklinCovey® organization to implement The Leader in Me in schools, and has led a capital campaign, raising $1.4 million to fund the initiative.

“We are honored for TC Cherry to have achieved such a designation, and we are especially thankful to The Leader in Me investors who had the vision and drive to bring this initiative to our schools,” said Ron Bunch, Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce president/CEO. “This program is extremely important, and we are so fortunate to have schools and businesses that support talent development and community growth.”

Congratulations, T. C. Cherry faculty, staff, and students!
