Frequently Asked Questions
What supplies will my child need?
Your child will need to have a backpack that is large enough to hold a plastic zipper bag full of change of clothes (please include socks), a regular sized folder and a small blanket or sheet for rest time. Please send your child with an extra change of clothes (pants, shirt, underwear and socks) in a large plastic zippered bag in case they have an accident or choose a messy play activity. All of your child's belongings will need to fit inside your child's backpack for sanitation reasons. From time to time, our staff may provide a "wish list" of items that they would like to have that you may wish to provide. However, it is not necessary to purchase any items for your child if you can not or do not wish to.
When is Preschool?
BGISD Preschool students attend four days per week with sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 2:30 pm.
Can I just come to the classroom?
All visitors, including family members, must sign in in the office. In order to volunteer in the classroom, you must go through a volunteer orientation with the Family Resource Center Coordinator and have a criminal background check. You can contact your schools' FRYSC to make arrangements. We would love to have family members come in to our classrooms and help with our program. Please let us know if we can do anything to help with the process of becoming an approved volunteer.
Will my child be safe?
Safety is paramount with all of our students in Bowling Green Independent School District and is our number one priority! Your child will be in the company of preschool staff the entire day they are with us and until we hand them off to you at the end of the day. We have our own playground, separate from the other students and it is completely fenced in. A bus monitor rides each bus that preschool students ride and will not allow your child to get off the bus unless an authorized person is available to meet them and hold their hand as they get off the bus. A staff member may ask for identification from an unfamiliar adult before releasing them. If there are custody issues or orders of protection, please be sure to provide copies of those documents to us. We eat our meals within the preschool classrooms. We will practice fire, tornado, earthquake and other emergency and safety drills.
How much is breakfast? Lunch?
Your child will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to you. We will provide breakfast and lunch to every student, unless you tell us not to, or send a meal with your child. Breakfast will be served from 8:10 - 8:30. Lunch will served around 11:00 We will be providing snacks for your child as well. Snack will be served at 2:00. We will provide all families information on school menu choices. Information about school menus is at this LINK. You will need to choose your child's school and either Pre-K breakfast or Pre-K lunch to see the menu for that meal.
What supplies will my child need?
There are no necessary supplies for preschool. Your child will need a small blanket or sheet for nap time that will need to fit into a backpack/bag LARGE enough for a library book and a folder. It is also helpful if they have a full change of clothes including underwear and socks in their back pack. If your child wears diapers or pull-ups, please send an ample supply of those and wipes to keep in the classroom.
What should my child wear to school?
We hope that children will be comfortable. We will be painting and involved in water and other activities that may be messy. Tennis shoes are also helpful. Our room may get cool when the air conditioning is on and warm when the heating is on; you may want to send a sweater or jacket with your child for the classroom even through it may be very warm outside. We will go outside EVERYDAY, weather permitting. So, please be mindful when dressing before school.
What are home visits?
Kentucky Preschool Regulations require that all Public Preschool programs provide AT LEAST two (2) home visits per family per school year. Your teacher will be contacting families of each preschooler to set up a home visit. This is an opportunity for them to find out more about your child and your dreams for your child. (It is NOT an inspection at all!) Children typically love for their teachers to come to their home and this also helps build our teacher/student relationships. We do not want to interrupt your family's routine, but are very much looking forward to visiting with you and getting to know you.
How will I know what my child is doing?
You will receive a information and communication from your teacher through TalkingPoints. You will also receive monthly the preschool newsletters. Each classroom will have a newsletter sent home periodically letting you know what they are working on in the classroom and any school related or program related announcements. You will receive a progress report four (4) times during the year regarding your child's progress. We are available to answer your questions about your child. It is difficult for us to talk with you during the school day and it is difficult for us to write individual notes on each student without taking away from our time with your child, but you will receive a folder that may have notes from time to time inside. There is also a place for you to send short notes to your teacher. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact your child's teacher through email or call the school and ask to leave a message for your child's teacher. Voice mail messages are checked at the end of the day, so if it is an emergency, please let the office know so that they can get staff an appropriate message.
