6th Grade English
Below are the Mastery Learning Targets, or priorities for all students to be successful when they advance to 7th Grade English. Mastery (M) of these skills means the student has met the grade-level standard and is independently performing on grade level. Mastery takes time to develop and may take the full school year.
COMPREHENSION
Analyzes the theme of a text using evidence.
Summarizes a fiction text.
Describes the plot of a story and explains how it advances.
Describes how a character develops in a narrative text.
Determines the figurative and connotative meaning of words and phrases.
Cites textual evidence to support a claim.
Summarizes a nonfiction text.
Analyzes the central ideas by citing details from a text.
Determines word meanings based on context clues.
Identifies an author's perspective and purpose.
Identifies and evaluates claims that are supported by evidence and reasoning from claims that are not.
COMPOSITION
Composes an introductory paragraph for an informative essay.
Composes body paragraphs with relevant details.
Composes a conclusion paragraph that restates the thesis and summarizes supporting details.
LANGUAGE
Recognizes pronouns and corrects pronoun errors.
Demonstrates correct usage of punctuation.
Uses affixes and roots to determine meaning of words.
Interprets figurative language in context.
