Below are the Mastery Learning Targets, or priorities for all students to be successful when they advance to Bowling Green High School. Mastery (M) of these skills means the student has met the grade-level standard and is independently performing on grade level. Mastery takes time to develop and may take the full school year.

• Identifies an author's purpose and conflicting viewpoints.

• Identifies and evaluates the argument and claims in a text by determining if the author uses good reasoning and evidence.

• Writes organized argument essays that include a clear structure, address a specific audience, and maintain a formal writing style.

• Writes an argument essay that clearly states a central claim, supports it with strong reasons and evidence, and thoughtfully addresses opposing viewpoints.

• Writes argument essays that support claims with logical reasoning and relevant, sufficient evidence.
