Bowling Green Independent Schools announces the upcoming retirement of Donald “D.G.” Sherrill, Director of Pupil Personnel, effective June 30, 2026. Sherrill’s retirement marks the conclusion of 34 years in education, with the last nine years at the district’s central office.
Since 2017 as Director of Pupil Personnel, D.G. Sherrill both led and refined the district’s holistic approach to student success. Under his leadership, BGISD has consistently maintained an attendance rate among the top in the state of Kentucky, a testament to his commitment to student accountability and engagement.
Sherrill’s tenure has also been defined by the expansion of student support services. He was instrumental in:
Implementing comprehensive mental health services across the district.
Securing and managing the district’s school nurse contract with Graves Gilbert Clinic.
Strengthening social work programs.
And overseeing Family Resource and Youth Services Centers (FRYSC), ensuring families have the resources needed to overcome barriers to learning.
Before moving to the district office, Sherrill served 12 years at Bowling Green High School as a special education teacher, athletic director, and head coach of the Purples boys basketball team.
Prior to joining BGISD in 2005, Sherrill worked for Dawson Springs Independent, Hopkinsville High School, and Allen County-Scottsville. His background as a FRYSC Coordinator, special education teacher, and coach provided him with a unique perspective on the "whole child" that ultimately defined his work as a district leader.
"When D.G. joined our high school staff in 2005 as a Special Education Teacher and Boys Basketball Coach, it was apparent that he would be a leader in this district for many years. That continued when D.G. joined our district leadership team in 2017. He brought a work ethic and a focus on helping kids that is second to none," says Superintendent Gary Fields. "Over the last nine years, he has transformed how we support our students' physical and mental well-being. His impact on our district’s culture and our students' lives will be felt for years to come."
The district will immediately begin the process hiring the next Director of Pupil Personnel, to begin July 1, 2026.
